Dad is just waking up and may be released tomorrow! He broke his ankle in 2 places but all went very well according to his surgeon.
Most parents don’t want their children looking at certain websites (i.e. porn, hate, etc.). The number one way to prevent children from viewing content they (the parents) don’t want them to see is by actually watching what their child is doing. I know this isn’t possible to do all the time and that’s why there are programs that you can install on the computer to help. Many people know about NetNanny and CyberSitter but they don’t want to pay for them. How about a FREE alternative?
Naomi is a free content filtering program designed for families. It has a very simple (too simple?) interface. When running, there is a tray icon that parents can click on in order to temporarily disable the filter after providing the correct password.
Naomi features (from the website):
* Heuristic analysis capable of recognizing new material automatically.
* Semantic analysis of web pages contents and analysis of their addresses and links.
* Recognizes all the major languages (10+).
* Recognizes ICRA labeling system.
* Monitoring is not limited to web sites, but covers the whole local internet traffic.
* Works with all service providers and software applications, and does not alter settings.
* Allows blocking of file-sharing applications.
* Password-protected (the password is chosen during the installation).
* Easy to use: does not require configuration.
* Can be used on slow connections (it does not perform any download in background).
The program is only designed to block content. It cannot be set to only allow access to certain sites. Also, it can be installed on a per-login basis using the Personal Edition (look next to Other versions on the front page). The Personal Edition will not install multiple copies of the files if it is installed on more than one user profile.
Worried that this is a spy/adware supported program? Check out the Naomi page on Softpedia. Version 3.1 has been guaranteed 100% clean. There is also a review available from Softpedia.
