The Atomic Automobile

by @ 8:09 pm. Edit This Filed under General

The Ford Nucleon concept carThe Ford Nucleon concept carDuring the 1950s, much of the world was quivering with anticipation over the exciting prospects of nuclear power. Atomic energy promised to churn out clean, safe electricity that would be “too cheap to meter.” It seemed that there was no energy problem too large or too small for the mighty atom to tackle during the glorious and modern Atomic Age.

It was during this honeymoon with nuclear energy– in 1957– that the Ford Motor Company unveiled the most ambitious project in their history: a concept vehicle which had a sleek futuristic look, emitted no harmful vapors, and offered incredible fuel mileage far beyond that of the most efficient cars ever built. This automobile-of-the-future was called the Ford Nucleon, named for its highly unique design feature… a pint-size atomic fission reactor in the trunk.

PrinterAnywhere

by @ 9:20 am. Edit This Filed under Utilities

Did you ever have trouble installing a home network or tried to get your laptop computer to print to your desktop’s printer, without much luck? PrinterAnywhere is here to help. The software works by having you establish a username and password, then allows you to setup the client on both your PC’s, including the remote printer name. This way, you bypass networking issues and are able to print documents over the connection made by the client. The nice thing is that you don’t need to have the remote printer’s drivers installed on your laptop, so long as your desktop has them installed, you’re all set. It prints quickly, as if you had your laptop computer connected directly to the printer via cable. This is an interesting piece of free software, currently in beta. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “why not just get a wireless card or wireless print server?” The answer is yes, that would be easier for some people. However, networking issues aside, one of the ideas behind PrinterAnywhere is that you can print documents to a “WAN” (Wide area network) or in easier terms, a friend’s computer at a distance.

It’s FREE.

What is StumbleUpon?

by @ 10:49 am. Edit This Filed under Interesting Links, Utilities

Someone mentioned this site to me awhile back, and I knew it would be a great link to offer, but I realized that it would be a huge distraction and become an addiction which would upset the balance of my family life. So I held off until now…….

StumbleUpon helps you discover and share great websites. As you click Stumble!, we deliver high-quality pages matched to your personal preferences. These pages have been explicitly recommended by your friends or one of 1,174,224 other websurfers with interests similar to you. Rating these sites you like () automatically shares them with like-minded people – and helps you discover great sites your friends recommend.

A note to that someone that recommended this link that I use as a firefox extension, YOU ROCK MAN!!!!!! to all others: Don’t blame me! Hiddenpcmaster.

spambox.us

What is spambox.us?approved.gif

With this service you can create a temporary e-mail address that will forward all incoming mail to your usual e-mail address.
Simply enter your e-mail address and the life time of your spambox and we will generate you a temporary @spambox.info e-mail.

Why does spambox.info exist?

Many websites ask for your e-mail address to download software or to register. But you don’t know what they’ll be doing with your e-mail.. Your e-mail will probably be stored in a database which will then be resold to spammers and you will be receiving unsolicited bulk e-mail.

How does this website help?

They create for you a temporary e-mail address that will expire in the time you chose, all the mails directed to this e-mail will be transparently forwarded to your real e-mail. For example, you need to register on a forum that requires e-mail verification, so you generate a spambox e-mail with an expiry of one hour. The generated e-mail will expire in an hour, way enough for the Forum to send you the verification code.

But.. They could be collecting my e-mail address!

Yes, they could be, but they’re not doing it. they’ve got an automatic cleanup agent that wipes out every n-minutes the expired spambox e-mails. Don’t worry, they won’t sell your e-mail to spammers.

Roman Numerals and Arithmetic

by @ 8:06 am. Edit This Filed under Education, Excel Tips

I’ve always been perplexed by roman numerals.

First of all, they’re just weird. Why would anyone come up with something so strange as a way of writing numbers?

And second, given that they’re so damned weird, hard to read, hard to work with, why do we still use them for so many things today?

Most people don’t realize it, but Excel has a ROMAN function that converts a value into Roman numerals.

Sometimes It’s a Hardware Problem

by @ 7:02 pm. Edit This Filed under Utilities, Computer Repair

Troubleshooting hardware stability can be difficult. But you can troubleshoot hardware stability quite effectively with the right software: Memtest86+ and Prime95.

* Testing memory stability with Memtest86+

Memtest86+ isn’t the only memory testing diagnostic out there, but it’s probably the most well-known. Microsoft also offers their Windows Memory Diagnostic utility, which works exactly the same way. Memtest86+ is available in several forms from the Memtest86+ web site. I chose the ISO image, which I burned to CD.

Boot from the Memtest86 CD, and it’ll start the test run.

It’ll take about 30-45 minutes to test 4 gigabytes of memory. The progress bar at the top right gives you an indication of how long the test has to run; there are 8 total tests in the standard test run. Beware, because it’ll start repeating at test #1 after the first pass!

* Testing CPU stability with Prime95

Prime95 is my single favorite PC stability testing tool. If your PC can’t pass an overnight Prime95 run, it absolutely, positively has a hardware problem.* Although Prime95 is primarily a CPU test, it can also be a pretty good memory test, too. After downloading it, go to the Options menu and select Torture Test.

1. If you want to test CPU stability exclusively, choose “Small FFTs”.
2. If you want to test for CPU stability and memory stability, choose “Blend”.

If you have a Dual (or Quad) CPU machine, you must run multiple instances of Prime95 to load each CPU. The easiest way to do this is to copy the Prime95 folder and run multiple executables, each one from a unique folder. You may want to set CPU affinity on the executables with Task Manager, but the scheduler will take care of loading all the CPUs just fine by itself.

In my experience, Prime95 will error out almost immediately if your CPUs or memory are unstable. This is great for troubleshooting because you know quickly if there’s a problem or not. If you can run Prime95 “small FFTs” for an hour, it’s highly likely that the CPU isn’t your problem. And if you can run the same test overnight, CPU problems can be definitively ruled out.

Although software is notoriously unreliable, we can’t always blame the software. Sometimes you really do have a hardware problem.

Note * CPUs are almost never defective; it’s usually a heat or power supply related failure.

I have settled on a Linux Distribution!

by @ 12:36 pm. Edit This Filed under Linux, Suse Linux

and the winner is : Open Suse 10.1 (Click on the Picture for full size, then click on the picture again to return)

I have tried the following: Xandros, Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva and Mepis.

They are all very nice! But, Suse Linux 10.1 is the best fit for me. It has the nicest, cleanest, polished user interface of them all and is aimed at the moderate Linux user with some experience, but can require a heavy Linux understanding in the future. Unlike Xandros, which closely emulates the “Windows” interface and aimed at the Windows user just experimenting with Linux for the 1st time..
