Tennessee 2006

Just for Business. I was elected to Drive a pickup truck from NY to Tennessee as it was the most practical way to transport the vehicle to another distribution center. it only took 13-1/2 hours from door to door. I’m flying back on Thursday. Tomorrow is my scheduled training seminar. I can’t wait to the the Hoermann Distribution Center in the Morning!

Being the “City Slicker” that I am, I was impressed with how many Cows dotted the landscape on my journey down. That’s right Justin! COWS all over the place!

An easy solution to your backup headaches.

by @ 12:54 pm. Edit This Filed under Utilities

Sometimes you have files that are very important to you, and you need to make sure that you retain access to them, in the event of a catastrophe. While most people know and understand that they need to have a good backup process in place that they can trust, most people also don’t have one. The reason most people don’t have one is that it’s a pain to do.

Here’s an easy way to start backing up the important files in your life. Create a Gmail account for the purpose of storing your backed up files, then download and install Backup to Email.

Backup to Email is a little utility that adds a context menu option on your system called, appropriately, “Backup to Email”. Choosing that menu option when right-clicking on a file will automatically zip up the file into 10 MB chunks (if the file is larger than 10 MB in the first place), and email it to a pre-determined email address. This is where that Gmail account you created comes in.

It doesn’t get much simpler than that. Backup to Email also has some rudimentary functionality to deal with dropped connections; if a connection is dropped during a file transfer, it will re-attempt the transfer 100 times at two minute intervals.

Mypictr is a simple web based application that helps you create avatars - or “social pictures”, as it calls them - by uploading a picture and either selecting the social network you want to use it with or defining your own dimensions.

For example, let’s say you’ve been dying to upload your own avatar to you favorite forum such as The Squirrel Forums, but you just don’t know (or don’t have the time to figure out) how to get your image resized to 160×160 pixels. Just upload your picture, enter your desired dimensions, and drag around the zoom and crop tools until your avatar is perfect. Hit “pictrit” and you have the option to download the cropped image or have it emailed to you. Now you’ve go no excuse for that unattractive “no image available” default.

Trying out Windows Vista

My Vista Desktop

Click on the Thumbnail above to see my Vista Desktop up close. I have installed Vista RC2 on my junkie computer to give it a whirl. I know that I have bashed Microsoft in the past, but I really think they have something going this time. It’s pretty to look at and it runs smooth on only 512 megs of ram on a 7 gig Hardrive.

Digital SLR Camera

by @ 7:23 pm. Edit This Filed under Personal News, Photography

I’m not quite sure why I’m starting to get interested in Photography again but for some strange reason I am.

It all started many years ago. My Grandfather simply LOVED photography. I remember he and I spent an entire day walking around NYC when I was about 11 or 12 years old. We must have stopped at every single camera store on the west side of Manhattan. It was then he provided me with my first real 35mm camera.

Of course, a few years later I took photography in High School and even had my own Darkroom setup in the basement of my parents home. I actually turned out some really nice stuff.

FAST FORWARD 25 years > DIGITAL CAMERAS! (no more film)

and the only darkroom really necessary is sitting at your computer with your lights off late at night tweaking images with a copy of the grand puba of digital manipulators, Adobe Photoshop. Once finished, and a couple of mouse clicks later, a trip to the nearest local CVS Photo center to pickup your beautiful 8X10 glossy prints ready for framing.

I still catch myself thinking how advanced the technology has become and what would my grandfather think of it today. (I’m sure if he were alive today he’d be sending me some pretty large attachments in my email!)

I certainly have been away from photography long enough to realize I have a lot to learn.

One pretty good example is that Digital SLR Camera’s are “Instant On” ( I never knew that! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve missed the shot due to digicam “bootup time”!

This means if your camera is hanging around your neck and in the OFF position, and you see a three-legged man riding a unicycle towards you, you can quickly turn the camera on and snap the shot. With an average digital camera it will usually take several seconds to startup, and then you’ll have to wait a second or so for it to focus, and then when you click the shutter there will be maybe another second before the image is actually taken - and the three-legged man will be gone.

I’m sure you will see future articles posted here as I’m creating a new category called Photography.

Crazy Chess!

by @ 9:55 am. Edit This Filed under Games

Chess comes to life, in this original, highly addictive

real-time chess game.

Play as the White Knight, engaged in a fierce battle of skill against the dreaded army of Black Pawns.
Defend your castle against their merciless onslaught by moving in the knight’s ‘L’ move to kill the pawns.
But here’s where it gets a gazillion times more exciting -

it’s not turn-based!

Move your Knight as fast as you can, across the board,
taking out the black pawns and halting their attack march towards your castle.
There are also some really neat power-ups of speed, stealth, freeze and destruction to name a few.

This is a game like no other - it’s Crazy Chess!
