SizeMe

by @ 3:43 pm. Edit This Filed under Utilities

SizeMe makes it possible to scan a directory and compare it to how many floppy/zip/CD-R/DVD-discs you need. (Many call it spanning or span of elements over a medium). It tries to fill each disc up as much as possible, and gives you the result on each disc.

For those of you not running a Home Server for backups, this is pretty handy.

Here is a great place to start if you know what router you have…

The IT Crowd — season two, episode one

by @ 9:49 am. Edit This Filed under Movies & TV

Yaaa baaaby! The first episode of season two of The IT Crowd has aired and it’s already available for viewing!

The IT Crowd is the nerd sitcom about sysadmins. The US adaptation of it that NBC picked up is reportedly not so hot, but I loved the British version and I was reallyhappy when it got picked up for a second season.

Channel 4, the show’s homebase, has a ridiculous DRM-based web-viewing option, but I can’t get that to work . Lucky for me — and you — intrepid fans of the show have already posted it on Youtube.

Season two, episode one is called “The Work Outing.”

eBay Find of the Day: Big Papi’s Mercedes SL65

by @ 8:35 pm. Edit This Filed under Ebay Oddities

Forget about brokers — when celebs need to unload cars, they head straight for My eBay.

This particular Red Sox Red SL65 happens to be the property of Mr. Walk-Off Home Run David Ortiz, alias Big Papi, from the Boston Red Sox. He bought it for himself when the BoSox won the 2004 World Series (after an 86-year drought, in case you forgot), then dropped another thirty-five large making it custom. There are black D’s in the 20″ Lorinser center caps. There are two subs behind the front seats, and between the speakers is a baseball diamond with D.O.’s initials in relief. There’s a bodykit that we’ll let you comment on in private. And the interior is, of course, red and black.

I wonder what Derek Jeter Drives, Perhaps a “Monster Hummer” that eats SL65’s for breakfast! Does anyone know?

Windows/Mac/Linux: Temporarily turn your computer into a home theater with the GeeXboX live CD. All you need to do is drop the GeeXbox CD into your drive and restart. When you are done with GeeXbox, remove the CD, restart your computer and you will return to your existing operating system. Don’t Visit Blockbuster To Redeem This Coupon

by @ 9:19 am. Edit This Filed under Coupons & Deals

This Blockbuster coupon cannot be redeemed for free rentals, soda, or popcorn. It is a waste of toner and time. From Snopes:

It apparently originated as a genuine rewards coupon e-mailed as part of a Blockbuster promotion, but its use is supposed to be tied to the redeemer’s having earned it through participation in a specific affiliate program. Thus, the many, many consumers (other than the original intended recipients) who have been forwarded a copy of the same coupon by others and tried to redeem it at Blockbuster outlets have been informed (by store personnel and/or in-store signage) that the coupon is not legitimate and will not be accepted.

Ugh, another internet myth debunked by Snopes. First they say Bill Gates won’t give us $245 for forwarding an email, and now this. Thanks, Snopes, for ruining the internet.

Alice, Thanks anyway. It was the thought that counts. ;)

Windows Tip: Tile windows with the Control key

by @ 9:44 am. Edit This Filed under Hints & Tips, Education

Quickly and easily work side by side between two application windows by tiling them vertically (or horizontally). To do so, Ctrl+Click on each window you want to be visible on the taskbar and right-click; from the context menu choose “Tile Vertically” (or horizontally.) This is an old-school Windows tip that comes in handy on that new widescreen monitor.

Cool!, I forgot about that one. Hiddenpcmaster

Complete removal of Norton products..

by @ 8:45 am. Edit This Filed under Utilities

Over the years, (since 1990) I have used Norton products of all kinds. Some good some bad. It all depends on what pc you install them on. I’m currently using Norton A/V Corp Edition 10 to protect my laptop from the nasties and it really does a great job of that without hogging up resources. In the past, I’ve tried using Norton Utilities which brought my pc to it’s knees!

So, If for whatever reason you need to completely strip a computer of Norton, use the Norton Removal Tool.
