You may encounter someone in your home or office that abuses their privilege of having open access to all websites on the internet. This is a simple way to block them without affecting the entire local network at the router level…..
When the offending user isn’t in front of his or her pc, open this file with wordpad:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
To block ebay all you do is add this line:
0.0.0.0 www.ebay.com
Then be sure to “save” the file.
Now when the go to ebay.com, it gets routed to 0.0.0.0 and the browser shows ‘Connection closed by remote server’
(note, to unblock it, just add a comment symbol, ‘#’ to the front of that line in the hosts file)
I’m so bad!!
Have you ever scribbled down a new contacts email address, only to arrive to your computer and get frustrated with the fact that you can’t read your chicken scratch? You are now left with two choices…send emails out to all different variations of the email address, or use Verify Email Address.
Verify Email Address takes the guess work out of whether or not an email address is active. The system verify’s email addresses by connecting to the mail server in question and checking that the user name and mailbox exist. Of course this tool can also be used to check out how people have their mail servers set up, which could pose somewhat of a security threat.
I’m not sure who would use this or why but, this video shows you how to “hide” a folder on your desktop or anywhere within your Windows pc by giving a file folder a blank name and blank icon, unless you’re specifically looking for it, the folder’s existence isn’t immediately apparent.
While this might be good for low security items , if you want true privacy (versus security through obscurity), go with something like TrueCrypt.
